"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" is a full-length extension of the seventh chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula, chronicling the dramatic events aboard the Demeter 1897 the film begins as the Demeter sails from Transylvania to London, 1897; where Captain Eliot , the crew, . along with his first mate, Wojcheck, and his grandson Toby, who carries Clemens (Corey Hawkins), is stranded on board due to a mysterious illness.
Scientific events begin on the ship, including the killing of both animals and Toby's dog. The sailors begin to see and hear strange things at night, and the rats on board seem to have disappeared. The crew disappears, and Anna Clemens standing by suggests they have a Nosferatu who will steal the lines from Mel Brooks. Dracula (Javier Botet) continues to gorge on the ship, and the survivors try to figure out how to stop him before he reaches London.
Directed by André Øvredal, the film creates a haunting and eerie atmosphere throughout, with Dracula playing cat and mouse with the gang. The performances, especially from genre MVPs Dastamalchian, Franciosi, and Botet, are strong and convincing, raising the emotional stakes to make up for the lack of surprise
However, there are two things where the film stumbles: the slow pace, and the final scene which only serves to set up a future film. Despite these flaws, "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" is an intelligent, well-crafted, and occasionally creepy take on a story that horror fans and regular moviegoers alike can appreciate.
