"The Green Mile" is a film based on Stephen King's novel "The Green Mile" and directed by Frank Darabont. The film tells the story of Paul Edgecomb, who is in charge of Death Row in a Louisiana penitentiary during the Depression. Paul is a nice man, but his staff is competent and humane. One day, a new prisoner, John Coffey, arrives, convicted of molesting and killing two little white girls. Coffey is afraid of the dark and straightforward in shaking Paul's hand. The movie is told in flashback, with the story taking at least an hour to get to the sensational and supernatural. The film is a shade over three hours long, allowing the audience to feel the passage of prison months and years. The extra time in the film allows for a more detailed and spaced story, with vivid characters, humor, outrage, and emotional release.
