Vaazhai is based on the life of Mari Selvaraj and focuses on the struggles of a schoolboy named Sivanendhan in Puliyankulam village. The film follows Sivanendra and his close friend Raghul who work to repay a debt left by their late father. 

The film showcases the harsh reality of their lives and the caste dynamics in the village. This film has a heartwarming and moving story. There are moments both happy and sad, such as Siwanendra falling in love with teacher Pung Koti, but the film focuses on the big man in the village as opposed to the wrongdoing. This makes it difficult to connect with your audience. The acting is also outstanding, with Ponvel and Raghul giving strong performances. The film's cinematography captures the countryside and banana plantations in earthy detail, and Santosh Narayanan's music perfectly complements the scenes with Vazhai's soul and presence. But he could use more gray in his village painting.
