Mia Goth and Ti West's "X" and "Pearl" won the arthouse horror genre with "Maixxxin" and "Pearl," respectively. 

However, "MaXXXine" is a disappointing sequel, lacking the swagger and spark that makes a Goth character captivating. Set in central Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, with Maxine Minx, a young and private investigator seduced to a bloody death by LAPD detectives, Goth's character is less interesting as the crisis is delayed, and the film lacks tension and effort. 

The film is also sprinkled with cinematic cohesion or lack of meaning, making it a superficial examination of tawdry '80s culture.
