"Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child of Fire" is the first installment of Zack Snyder's planned two-part "Star Wars" knockoff. The film follows a group of misfits preparing to fight space Nazis, and Akira Kurosawa is back in space. But more often than not more like a soundtrack to a film than an actual film with characters, immediate drama and emotional elements, the space farmers led by Corey Stoll can’t stand the onslaught of space fascist hordes there representing the edge of the former greatest colonial power in the Mother Earth . Cora, a small farmer with a past, sets out to find warriors who can train her people to fight back.
Snyder and co-writers Shay Hatton and Kurt Johnstad never really try to be original. Instead they wander into contrived territory, only now with bigger budgets and Snyder-y pressure to emulate the look and feel of other movies and comic books. Movies generally look more like animated films than real movies with characters, immediate drama and emotional elements. Critics have joked that "Rebel Moon" is an A.I. Artistic, yet over-produced van art films like this have always been Snyder’s style.
