The previous two great countercultural science fiction novels were Robert Heinlein and Frank Herbert’s 1965 Dune, Stranger in a Strange Land. The new film adaptation of the book, directed by Denis Villeneuve, vividly visualizes these events. Set in the distant future, mankind has evolved in many scientific fields and changed in many spiritual fields. The Atreides Imperial Family is tasked with controlling the desert planet of Arrakis, which provides something called "spice" for the living beings they produce and poses a host of communications threats to the outside world

Villeneuve’s film adaptation of the book is more than satisfying, as it manages to walk a thin line between greatness and fakery between gripping sequences The film’s large cast embodies Herbert’s characters, who are usually more archetypes than individuals. Timothy Chalamet relies heavily on callowness in his early portrayal of Paul Atraides, while Oscar Isaac is sublime as Paul’s father, the Duke. Rebecca Ferguson is mysterious and strong as Paul’s mother Jessica. Zendaya is better than Chaney who fits, fits, and the biologist Kynes is a gender swap and Sharon Duncan-Brewster plays with terrific energy.

Villeneuve said the film was made "as a tribute to the experience of feature films," which I kind of agree with. The film is full of cinematic allusions, and mostly images in the tradition of high cinematic ideals. There are also arguable but undeniable outliers like Hitchcock's 1957 version of "The Man Who Knew Too Much," Antonioni's "Red Desert" and Hans Zimmer's let's-test-those-subwoofers score evoke Christopher Nolan, Nolan's There are also visual echoes of Ridley Scott.
